Thomas, the son of Robert Gore and Mary Riches, was born into the merchant family of John Gore & Sons. Gore & Co was a mercantile and warehousing business of which Robert and his brother John were the principal partners. Mary Riches was the daughter of a Suffolk banker who had been Mayor of Woodbridge.
