#1016, Arthur LOWE

From the pedigree of the Strode Family of Newnham, Devon, Arthur is the third son of the Very Rev. Thomas Hill Peregrine Furye Lowe of the Court of Hill in the parish of Burford, co Salop, Clerk in Holy Orders, Dean of Exeter in the Commission of the Peace for the County of Salop. He was born 21 12 1781 Worcestershire and died 17 01 1861 in Exeter, Devon. He married Ellen Lucy Pardoe born 1785 Shropshire and died 17 06 1843 Exeter, Devon. They married 24 02 1808 Ludlow, Shropshire and had five chidren.

Admiral Arthur Lowe married 3 times. Firstly Katherine Ommanney in 1848; secondly Florence Strode in 1858 and thirdly Lady Elizabeth Chads in 1864

Arthur entered the Navy in 1827.  He was promoted Lieutenant 30th September 1837; Commander 28th August 1841; Captain 30th August 1845; Rear-Admiral 24th September 1863; Vice-Admiral 27th February 1870; Retired Admiral 18 June 1876.  Appointed Captain in Impregnable, flagship of Admiral John Acworth Ommanney, Devonport, 1st January 1852 and Captain in  Implacable, training ship, Devonport, 9th June 1855.

 Arthur Lowe, born 26 July, 1814, at Corfton, co. Salop, is third son of the Rev. Thos. Hill Peregrine Furye Lowe, D.D. (of Court of Hill, Salop, and Norbiton House, Surrey), Dean of Exeter, by Ellen Lucy, eldest daughter of Geo. Pardee, Esq., of Nash Court, Salop; and nephew, by marriage, of Capt. Sir Thos. Hastings, R.N., Kt.
This officer entered the Navy, 25 April, 1827, as Fst.-cl. Vol., on board the Victory 104, Capt. Chas. Inglis, bearing the flag at Portsmouth of Sir Geo. Martin; sailed soon afterwards for the Lisbon station in the Melville 74, Capt. Henry Hill; was employed in the Mediterranean as Midshipman, from 1828 to 1832, in the Ferret 10, Capt. Thos. Hastings, and Donegal 78, Capt. John Dick; then rejoined Capt. Hastings in the Excellent gunnery-ship at Portsmouth, where he passed his examination in July, 1833; and after a servitude of about three years in the East Indies and on the north coast of Spain in the Andromache 28, Capt. Henry Ducie Chads, and Phoenix steamer, Capt. Wm. Honyman Henderson, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant 3 Sept. 1837. On 28 of the following Nov. he obtained an appointment to the Volage 28, Capt. Henry Smith, fitting at Chatham; and on 2 Feb. 1838 he joined the Hastings 72, Capts. Fras. Erskine Loch and John Lawrence. In that ship he served in the Mediterranean until advanced to the rank of Commander 28 Aug. 1841. His last appointment was, 3 June, 1842, to the Second-Captaincy of the Excellent, still commanded by his uncle, with whom he continued until promoted to his present rank 30 Aug. 1845. Agents ?
