George was a scholar of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, admitted 2nd September 1757, aged 17. BA (6th Wrangler) 1762 and MA 1765.
Vicar of Ashfield, 1773; Vicar of Debenham, 1773-1790; Rector of Holbrook, Suffolk. He probably died in Ipswich as he has a Monumental Inscription at St Clement's, Ipswich.
George and Mary Routh adopted a child of William Cobbold's first marriage who was born in 1777 and died on 4th January 1849.
