Dudley has been described as 'a dear, kind gentleman'; he adopted Mirabel's 3 children (Patrick, Carola and Shirley) by Charles Orr-Simpson when he (Charles) disappeared out of their lives in about 1939. He married Mirabel in 1944 so it was probably soon thereafter.
