John's father was Rear-Admiral G H (Hierarchus) Daniel. John went up to Christ's College, Cambridge in 1823 and obtained his BA in 1827. He was ordained deacon in 1828 and priest in 1829 (both Norwich). He was appointed Vicar of Weybread, Suffolk in 1829 and was Perpetual Curate of Wingfield, Suffolk from 1845 until 1847. He was Chaplain to the County Prison at Ipswich in 1864.
